Success Story: Rosie’s Journey – From College to Craftsmanship
Rosie Smith’s journey into the automotive repair trade is a shining example of how apprenticeships transform lives and shape the future of an industry.
From Classroom to Workshop
After leaving school, Rosie initially pursued fine art and photography in college. However, she quickly realised that traditional classroom learning wasn’t for her. “I’ve always been a hands-on person,” Rosie explains. “Sitting in a classroom all day just wasn’t for me.”
While searching for a more practical career path, Rosie stumbled upon an apprenticeship in vehicle damage repair. Despite having no prior experience in the trade, the opportunity to work as a paint technician immediately appealed to her. “I didn’t even know this job existed, but I thought it might suit me,” she recalls.
Learning the Trade
Rosie joined Steer Automotive Group as an apprentice, where she received hands-on training and mentorship from experienced professionals. Over three years, she honed her skills, gradually progressing from shadowing her mentor to independently completing complex paint jobs.

“The harder the job, the more satisfying it is to see it done perfectly,” Rosie shares. “I love working on tricky colours like tinted clears. They’re tough to match, but when they’re done right, they look amazing.”
Breaking Barriers
As a woman in a traditionally male-dominated trade, Rosie has never felt out of place. “The team treats me the same as anyone else, and I’ve always felt supported,” she says. Her experience highlights the changing face of the industry, with more women pursuing careers in automotive repair.
Looking Ahead
Now nearing the end of her apprenticeship, Rosie is exploring opportunities to specialise further. She dreams of working on high-end vehicles or even delving into custom paintwork, blending her artistic background with her technical skills.
Advice for Future Apprentices

“If you’re passionate and willing to work hard, an apprenticeship can be life-changing,” Rosie says. “You get paid to learn, and the skills you gain are invaluable. It’s a great option for anyone who loves hands-on work.”
